Hosting · shared VPS, own VPS, dedicated
Web hosting on European servers.
Your site runs on a server that I set up and look after, with backups kept off-site. Sites that others built are welcome too.
what's included
Managed by me, without a control panel.
You only notice hosting when something goes wrong, like a page that should load in under a second but takes five, or a backup that has been failing for months without anyone noticing. Servers outside Europe also complicate GDPR for anyone here who holds client data. The hosting that I run is set up to avoid all three.
Speed and security
Instead of a control panel. Most hosting is run through a control panel, which uses part of the server's resources and gives an attacker one more way in. I run my servers with scripts that I have refined over nearly ten years, across every client site that I host, so nothing is wasted on a panel and there is less to attack.
Domain and email, kept separate
Each job with its own provider. The domain and the email are not kept on the hosting itself, as usually happens. Each runs on its own provider that specialises in it, one built to serve your site quickly and reliably, the other to deliver your email into the inbox instead of the spam folder. Each piece does one job well, which a bundled hosting package can't match.
Three options
Shared VPS, own VPS, dedicated. There are three options, depending on size and load. Smaller sites go on a shared VPS, where your site runs alongside a small number of other client sites that I host. This isn't the classic shared hosting model with hundreds of sites on a single server. E-shops and busier projects get their own VPS. Custom software that needs isolated resources gets a dedicated physical server.
Mostly the sites I build. I mainly host the sites that I build. The shared VPS is reserved for them, so your site never sits next to a site that I don't control. A site or software that someone else built is also welcome, on its own VPS or on a dedicated server. Whichever the case, I'll tell you which option your site needs. Most of the time the cheapest one that fits is the right answer.
Certificates, backups and monitoring
The routine, automated. SSL certificates are issued and renewed automatically. Backups go to off-site storage as often as the site needs, so that a server failure can't destroy both the site and its backups. Uptime monitoring runs continuously in the background, so that I know about problems before you do. Hosting keeps the server running. Keeping the site itself up to date is a separate job, described on the support and maintenance page.
